Tal vez no sea vista como la mejor dirección de José Luis Cuerda -eclipsada por la ‘destapada’ Amanece Que No Es Poco-, pero sin lugar a dudas, La Lengua de las Mariposas es un título referencial de nuestro cine. Sin abandonar su estética crítica y descriptiva, Cuerda logra una representación de la situación educativa, religiosa, familiar y social de la Segunda República. La historia se centra en Moncho, un avispado niño, y su profesor Gregorio, interpretado por un elegantísimo y maduro Fernando Fernán-Gómez. Su conexión va más allá del ámbito educativo, y consigue recordar en ocasiones a la relación entre Salvatore y Alfredo de Cinema Paradiso.
