Pilar indiscutible del neorrealismo italiano, fantástica dirección de Michelangelo Antonioni. Susceptible relato de un matrimonio internamente acabado y de dos personas incapaces de afrontar la realidad. El aparente desinterés de los protagonistas no hace sino incrementar la degradación y el sufrimiento -concretamente de Lidia- y de su relación. Especial alusión a la conmovedora actuación de Jeanne Moreau y a la fotografía de Gianni di Venanzo.
