- Synopsis
- Blatantly propagandistic, in a style that recalls Mainland Chinese agri-movies of the 1970s, this is worth wading through for a final half-hour that starts with terrific mass scenes of peasants holding a dyke against the waves and ends with the army leaving the area, its job done, to the sound of soaring choirs and orchestra. The paper-thin story concerns an affable army commander, Rhee Chol-sok, who is instructed to help in the army's mobilization in the countryside, where food production is imperiled by bad weather. The most recent of the eight North Korean movies showing at Udine this year, this was clearly made in response to the country's well-publicized food shortages: but it's also a good demonstration of how to turn negativea publicity into positive propaganda through sheer cinematic technique.
