Synopsis
March 21, 2010 - A volcanic eruption started in the Icelandic mountain pass of Fimmvörduháls. Dramatic and extremely spectacular, the eruption posed little danger. In the immediate vicinity of the eruption, lies one of Iceland's highest mountains, Eyjafjallajökull. It calmly waited for the Fimmvörduháls eruption to finish its course on April 13 before putting on a violent show of its own commencing on April 14. This eruption in the mountain's summit crater took place beneath a 200 meter thick layer of ice. The heat melted the ice and caused ash to spew into the air in such an abundance that air traffic in northern Europe was brought to a standstill for several days. This second eruption lasted for 40 days, concluding its explosive assault on May 23.
