Drama
Selfish Stanley Timberlake abruptly breaks up with her fiancé and seduces her sister's husband, who runs away with her. After the wayward spouse gets divorced, he marries the wicked woman, but her lying, cheating ways soon drive him to suicide. Then Stanley returns home to her family, where she continues to wreak havoc on those around her.

Cuenta John Huston en su autobiografía, “A libro abierto”, que nunca le gustó esta película, aunque después de verla me parece que se exigía demasiado a sí mismo.
Sin estar entre los mejores de su amplia filmografía, este film tiene una muy buena calidad y unas interpretaciones sobresalientes, de Bette Davis, (en uno de los papeles que tan bien le iban de mala, malísima), de Olivia de Havilland, dando un buen contrapunto a la maldad de la Davis, y de Charles Coburn.
La realización, la fotografía en B/N y la música de Max Steiner son más que correctas. El guion de Howard Koch es bueno. La película se sigue con interés de principio a fin. A destacar la denuncia de la discriminación racial mediante la aparición de un personaje negro injustamente acusado de un delito.
Recomendable.
