This film has no plot. It is more like an etching or, perhaps, one of those portraits at the minute made by untalented painters in the streets of Madrid around 1950. The capital was then more than ever the breakwater of Spain. Largo plantel de grandes, medianos y mediocres actores del cine español lo que nos ofrece Garci en este aguafuerte de vidas entrecruzadas del Madrid de 1950. Garci usa la elipsis y los silencios como un impresionista, espera quizá que su sentimiento sea trasplantado al plano del espectador, lográndolo a veces pero no siempre. No obstante, el relato intrincado y entrecruzado de diversas historias está estupendamente filmado. En esta película desfilan como una estantigua de seres extraviados de su suerte

el director de banco casado con una bonita esposa pero que lo que más ansía es ser cineasta, el cura que erró su camino y se enamoró de una guapa taquillera de metro que sueña con una plaza en el ministerio como secretaria, el camarero que quiere ser actor teatral y al que le gastan crueles bromas telefónicas, el torero de salón que recibe la feliz ovación en el Florida Park por un público anhelante de otras faenas y que ya no sueña siquiera con el verdadero arte en el auténtico coso, el pobrecito ordenanza del Banco Occidental de Credito y Ahorro que espera la visita de unos familiares del pueblo a los que les ha dicho siempre que él es el director; el poetastro que hilvana ripios y sueña con ganar algún juego floral, y así en fin...numerosas vidas impostadas e inauténticas como mero ejemplo de un Madrid teñido de sepia en la memoria del director que quizá vivió un Madrid que se resignó a ser (felizmente) pudiendo haber sido otra cosa (como a sus felices moradores)
