Un drama poético en relato que se desarrolla en el japón del siglo XII, donde los avatares de una familia forman el centro de atención. El padre con su carácter suave, que es gobernador de una provincia, es desterrado, sus hijos (Hanayaki, kagawa) vendidos como esclavos, la madre (Tanaka) obligada a prostituirse.

Una película conmovedora con una dirección y fotografía brillantes. Gran, gran película de uno de los grandes, Kenji Mizoguchi.
