Sin duda se trata de una película muy curiosa, un intenso drama familiar que a su estridente mensaje anticomunista une un fuerte componente religioso, concretamente católico. McCarey elabora una personal parábola sobre el hijo pródigo, en la que al pecado le siguen el arrepentimiento y el perdón. El hijo pródigo, por supuesto, es Robert Walker, en el que fue su último trabajo en el cine, antes de morir en 1951. La conflictiva relación que hay entre Dean Jagger y Robert Walker -padre e hijo, respectivamente- recuerda a la que tienen Jim Backus y James Dean en "Rebelde sin causa" (Rebel Without a Cause, 1955), de Nicholas Ray.
