Synopsis

Karoline, a young factory worker, struggles to survive in post-World War I Copenhagen. When she is laid off, abandoned on the street and pregnant, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman who runs an underground adoption agency and helps mothers find foster homes for their unwanted children. With nowhere else to turn, Karoline takes on the role of wet nurse. A strong connection develops between the two women, but Karoline's world crumbles when she discovers what lies behind her work.
