Synopsis
It is not easy to be a veterinarian and zoo director in Palestine. But the cheerful and kind-hearted Dr. Sami makes a brave attempt at keeping his spirits up in Qalqilya's zoo on the West Bank, close to the border with Israel. The zoo's giraffes died during the last Intifada, but Sami is firmly committed to keeping his zoo going and acquiring some new ones. The international rules set up by the association of zoos are strict, and even with his best intentions, it is a long way before Sami's zoo can live up to the standards that are required to house even just one of the beautiful, high-necked animals. 'Waiting for Giraffes' is a story about a thoroughly pleasant idealist, who is up against all possible odds, and throws a new light on an old conflict with a warmth and energy that is on par with that of Sami himself.
