Synopsis
A rare release from Ecuador, My Aunt Nora is the first non-documentary effort from director Jorge Preloran and his screenwriter wife Mabel Preloran. The disintegration of an aristocratic Quito family is witnessed through the eyes of its youngest member, Guiomar Vega. The story concentrates on middle-aged Aunt Nora (Isabel Casanova), still unmarried and still living under her mother's thumb. Bereft of any real parent figures, Vega grows closer to Aunt Nora, who, thanks to several improvident business transactions, loses her mind and ends up in an institution. Vega wants to invite Nora for Christmas dinner, but the rest of her selfish relatives prefer to ignore the poor woman. Aunt Nora commits suicide, prompting Vega to turn her back on her now-worthless family.
