- CITY LIFE, the monumental award winning episode film can best be characterized as a caleidoscopic panorama of the world. CITY LIFE is a visual anthology of twelve short stories by twelve innovative directors from all over the world. In each contribution each filmmaker presents his personal view of these cities he knows so well. In this way an inside view of the political, cultural and social changes in the cities of the world of the 1990s is provided.
Created by Dick Rijneke and Mildred van Leeuwaarden, the participating directors and cities chosen were Alejandro Agresti (Buenos Aires), Gabor Altorjay (Hamburgo), José Luis Guerín (Barcelona), Krzysztof Kieslowski (Varsovia), Clemens Klopfenstein (Bevagna), Tato Kotetishvili (Tbilisi), Ousmane William M'Baye (Dakar), Eagle Pennell (Houston), Carlos Reichenbach (Sao Paulo), Dick Rijneke & Mildred van Leeuwaarden (Randstad), Mrinal Sen (Calcuta) and Béla Tarr (Budapest).
City Life was the opening film at the19th International Film Festival Rotterdam and closed The Forum at the 40th Berlin Film Festival. It won prizes in Great Britain, U.S.A. and Russia. Major Award of the British film industry at the Birmingham International Film and Television Festival 1990. Getz World Peace Prize 1990, Chicago International Film Festival. Special Prize for the initiators from the Sovjet Filmmakers Union at the Moscow International Film Festival 1991.
