Media Author Review
United Kingdom
Telegraph
"Action cinema shorn of any franchise complications (...) After endless mugs of freeze-dried decaf, Ambulance is the real-deal triple espresso (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"A decently premised B-movie stretched out to an interminable 136 minutes, Ambulance maintains such a frenetic pace from beginning to end that it ultimately feels exhausting, and not in a good way."
United Kingdom
Empire
"It doesn’t all work. But when the sirens are blaring at their best, it is a reminder of why nobody does bold, brash, bonkers blockbusting quite as thrillingly — or loudly — as Bay (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Radio Times
"Nobody could deny that the Transformers filmmaker's stamp is all over this rather relentless film, which proves great entertainment value in spite of a multitude of flaws (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Ambulance has everything … except actors giving a decent performance as believable characters in a workable script (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"For all its showy excesses, sophomoric humour and strained gravitas, Ambulance is often riveting (...) This popcorn thriller certainly is not brainy, but its escapism has a muscular precision."
United States
Variety
"It takes you back to an age when action thrillers were big, loud, decadent, “rebellious,” and ripped off from "Die Hard." But this one, in its violent throttling way, is joyless."
United States
Common Sense Media
"A typically over-the-top Michael Bay production, this exhausting, far too long action movie still surprisingly passes muster with its batch of colorful, likable characters and wiry sense of humor (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
The Washington Post
"'Ambulance' will raise your pulse and tug at your heartstrings (...) [It] works like a charm (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"
United States
The Wrap
"Michael Bay returns to his mayhem roots – that part of his career when he didn’t need a lot of CGI, but still didn’t know how to shoot action cohesively."
United States
Slant
"The film’s stripped-down narrative allows for an emotional intimacy and vulnerability between characters that Bay typically eschews, mocks, or merely aestheticizes (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
IGN
"'Ambulance' may often be nonsensical, but it's also the biggest, boldest action movie of the past year and a spectacularly raucous return to form by director Michael Bay"
United States
IndieWire
"An attempt at something quasi-reflective best summarized as 'Speed' told with an awfully blatant Blue Lives Matter angle."
United States
Collider
"[The director's] best in decades. Bay scales back for a wild and crazy action film that is a hell of a ride."
United Kingdom
Time Out
"Something is always happening, very loudly, and everyone is concerned with looking very cool while it happens (...) The overall effect is deadening (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
Canada
JoBlo
"Bay is good at this, it's hard to think of another director that can make it work as well as it does. 'Ambulance' is not his best film, but there's enough here to at least entertain those that dig his bombastic style"
United Kingdom
NME
"Baggy at 136 minutes yet still somehow directed with the frenzy of every five-star police alarm in Grand Theft Auto, Ambulance will please Bay’s fans the most (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
ABC News
"Loud, long and ludicrous (...) Without a single character to relate to or care for, this is a movie on life support that needs to call its own ambulance"
Ireland
entertainment.ie
"[It] has enough charm to keep it moving even when the movie runs out of story (...) The concept is familiar but stable, and the action is silly enough to be fun (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 5)"
United States
Mashable
"Jake Gyllenhaal goes wild and yes thank you more please (...) Action sequences range from brutal to absolutely bonkers (...) Bay proves once more to be an absolute master of action excellence"
