Media Author Review
United States
Variety
"“Drive-Away Dolls” is 84 minutes long, and it’s styled to be an easy-to-watch caper, but it’s most definitely a trifle."
United States
San Francisco Chronicle
"“Drive-Away Dolls” feels like a young person’s movie, which is a good thing. It also seems like a movie directed by someone who grew up watching Tarantino movies, not Coen Brothers movies, which is unexpected but welcome, too. (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"A wild detour chock-a-block with wild detours, 'Drive-Away Dolls' comes from an artist regaining his capacity to take pleasure in the process, no matter if that means slackening the laser-focused perfectionist . (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
Canada
The Globe and Mail
"Drive-Away Dolls proves that there is a yawning gap between “a Coen Brothers film” and a “film by a Coen brother” (...) Almost nothing here works"
United States
USA Today
"The crime comedy throws back to Russ Meyer and John Waters B-movies as well as 1960s psychedelia, yet with contemporary sensibilities courtesy of two extremely charming leads. (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"
United States
The Washington Post
"As a fast-paced, bawdy road comedy, this isn’t an inauspicious debut as much as a curiously flimsy and forgettable one. (...) Rating: ★½ (out of 4)"
United States
IndieWire
"This odd couple comedy confidently straddles genres — delivering a stylishly violent action adventure and self-aware lezzie road trip, all in one."
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"Coen’s first solo narrative feature as director is a lightweight vehicle, enlivened by some talented actors but way too pleased with itself for something so inconsequential."
United Kingdom
Empire
"As furiously funny as it is helplessly horny, this lesbian road movie simultaneously feels exactly like a Coen brothers film — and entirely its own thing, too. (...) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Rolling Stone
"No one behind the wheel"
United States
The New York Observer
"It's stylish, and the dialogue is witty. But the storytelling in this Ethan Coen movie falters. (...) Maybe this is just a whimsical trip with quirky characters and little depth. (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
rogerebert.com
"An uproarious, sexy and deliciously feminine B-movie (...) Across dusty Americana landscapes, vibrant locations frozen in time and a pair of trippy flashbacks, “Drive-Away Dolls” has the kind of oomph you simply want to run away with. (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"'Drive-Away Dolls' lacks the magic of the filmmakers’ earlier projects (...) this underwhelming picture runs aground long before reaching its final destination."
United States
Los Angeles Times
"While its story fails to justify its own existence, it delivers what it says on the tin: dumb, randy fun, even if that feels retrograde in more ways than one"
United States
IGN
"Ethan Coen is no longer making movies with his brother Joel, but 'Drive-Away Dolls' proves that the Big Lebowski and Fargo filmmaker has an equally harmonious collaboration with co-writer Tricia Cooke"
Canada
JoBlo
"For me, it’s just not memorable, funny or stylish enough to work as the kind of entertainment it wants to be. Midnight movies are supposed to be fun, but this is just grating"
Canada
Screen Rant
"It’s certainly not Ethan Coen's strongest film, though it is saved by an especially fantastic performance by Geraldine Viswanathan and a fun story (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of 5)"
United States
Collider
"[It] never quite reaches its potential"
United Kingdom
Telegraph
"Ethan Coen tries to get along without his brother – unsuccessfully (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"Geraldine Viswanathan lends a quiet seriousness to her role that anchors this otherwise flimsy, silly story (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
Canada
Screen Anarchy
"While not quite the slamdunk one would hope for, given the pedigree behind it, 'Drive-Away Dolls' has its fair share of zanny charm, cultural critique, and poking gentle love and fun at the crime caper subgenre"
United States
The Film Stage
"Even if one doesn’t fully connect with the attempts at humor, to see the film’s MacGuffin revealed––and precisely how it pertains to a certain supporting character––is ultimately worth the price of admission alone"
United States
The Wrap
"A dated misfire (...) Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan fail to hold together a script that revels in the extreme"
United States
Slant
"Coen’s film knows when to pay homage and when to move to its own rhythm (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
AV Club
"A forgettable pastiche of better road movies"
United States
Mashable
"This movie is as racy as it is unabashedly entertaining. And yeah, some may call it trashy. But trashy done right can be a treasure."
United States
Chicago Reader
"'Drive-Away Dolls' succeeds in its die-hard punchiness and only works because the entire cast is genuinely charming"
