Baywatch

Action. Comedy Baywatch is the Paramount’s big screen take on the 1990s television series about California lifeguards. The story centers on a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Dwayne Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Zac Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon.

"A stupidly entertaining trash folly (...) [It] manages to repackage every aspect of the series except, perhaps, the reason it was popular in the first place."  NEG

"Boobs, butts and pecs — you were expecting Shakespeare? (...) A big-screen reboot so lifeless and mechanical that even its end-credits out-takes are not amusing, Baywatch proves much less than the sum of its undeniably attractive body parts."  NEG

"If you look beyond the dick jokes, 'Baywatch' is actually pretty fun (...) [It] won’t blow anything out of the water (...) but it will certainly make a splash."  NEU

"Torn between being a hard-R comedy, a coming-of-age story or a straight-up reboot, this film fails at all three (...) The cast feels mostly adrift"  NEG

"Seth Gordon isn’t an incisive enough director to satirise or relish the buffoonery on display (...) The film may pretend it’s more sophisticated than the show that spawned it, but its comedic stylings are alarmingly regressive."  NEG
