Media Author Review
United States
Variety
"A beautifully-realized portrait of delicately faceted characters and their relatable conundrums."
United States
Collider
"Between Dave Franco’s directorial debut with the horror mystery 'The Rental' and now the romantic and unapologetically honest 'Somebody I Used To Know', the 'Neighbors' star is quickly proving himself to be a multi-faceted filmmaker"
United States
The Playlist
"There’s not a single moment in the film that is palpably authentic or genuinely romantic, but the ensemble nonetheless puts their pluckiest foot forward."
United States
Entertainment Weekly
"There's a low-key charm to the movie's knowing spin on familiar beats"
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"The writing — intelligent but not showy — has echoes of Nora Ephron’s 'When Harry Met Sally' (...) it’s a low-key film with a lot of heart."
United States
Los Angeles Times
"A well-meaning dramedy with a great cast and admirable ambitions — but which never quite finds a good groove"
United States
AV Club
"A surprisingly fresh and melancholy take on the modern romantic comedy"
Canada
JoBlo
"With a great leading turn from Brie and solid supporting performances from Jay Ellis and Kiersey Clemons, 'Somebody I Used To Know' pushes the romantic comedy out of its comfort zone and delivers something refreshing and new"
United States
The New York Times
"The film lacks the indelible details and authentic feeling necessary to encode it in long-term memory. Indeed, soon after finishing the movie, it already feels far away"
Canada
Screen Rant
"While perhaps not quite funny enough to really deserve the 'com' aspect of the rom-com designation, Somebody I Used to Know is a worthy addition to the growing canon of romantic streaming movies"
United States
SlashFilm
"Franco builds a world that feels realistically lived in while letting talented performers flourish."
United States
The Review Geek
"'Somebody I Used to Know' is far from strikingly subversive, but still provides a pleasantly original twist on the romantic comedy genre"
United States
IndieWire
"Alison Brie and Dave Franco just made a Valentine’s Day classic for singles (...) an empowered meta update to 'My Best Friend's Wedding.'"
United States
Decider
"It delivers a thoughtful blend of comedy and character. You’re not going to bust a gut or burst into tears, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a watch"
United Kingdom
The Guardian
"An odd combination of broad semi-satirical humour and deeply serious hugging and learning (...) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Chicago Tribune
"How the story resolves itself is one of the more inspired and thoughtful narrative gambits in recent memory, landing on a hard-won emotional maturity (...) Rating: ★★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
Paste Magazine
"It’s not every day that you see a by-the-books rom-com squeezing in a semi-twist ending, and Franco does so in an admirably sneaky, cheeky, subtle way"
United States
Ready Steady Cut
"Another millennial midlife crisis movie that drowns in romantic cliches and too much quirkiness (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of 5)"
United States
