SlashFilm
"Haunting, harrowing, and hypnotic, Eight for Silver is a werewolf story with a lot on its mind. You’ll never look at a scarecrow the same way again."
United States
The Hollywood Reporter
"Brooding and baleful, even if it loses bite after a strong opening (...) It won’t disturb Lon Chaney Jr. in his grave, but still offers meat for genre fans to chew on."
United States
Variety
"Sean Ellis' original take on the werewolf genre looks gorgeous with aptly creepy design elements and eerie cinematography but lacks thematic direction."
United Kingdom
Mirror
"With an intriguing and ominous opening half-hour that promises something more unsettling than what is delivered, Eight for Silver is still an entertaining chiller from director Sean Ellis (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Collider
"Sean Ellis’ horror film has some nifty ideas but relies too heavily on superficial elements (...) There are no strong characters, and the plot only seems to serve the next bloody death or horrifying transformation"
United Kingdom
Screendaily
"Highly enjoyable (...) It’s inventive enough to surprise (...) Effects don’t disappoint either.
United States
Bloody Disgusting
"Ellis presents some fantastic and exciting ideas here. They’re just nestled in a pretty average feature. There’s some stellar gore work on display, but those scenes tend to come too few and far between (…) Rating: ★★½ (out of 5)"
Canada
Screen Rant
"'The Cursed' is merely a slow trek through horrific gore, lackluster and confusing werewolf lore, and a muddled understanding of the legacy of the Roma (…) Rating: ★★ (out of 5)"
United States
Los Angeles Times
"A serious, bold and artful movie (...) It is engaging, thanks to the way Ellis captures its era: not just through striking low-light images but also through a pervasive sense of menace"
Canada
Screen Anarchy
"The overabundance of characters [and] the hints of stories or subplots are minor problems that that never find resolution do little to dilute Ellis' essential contribution to a sub-genre desperately in need of reinvigoration"
United States
Polygon
"The costumes and sets all have weight, and the cast brings a compelling, convincing intensity to the material, but this is primarily a movie to watch for the visuals"
United States
AV Club
"Even when Ellis ramps up the suspense with crosscutting and monster mayhem in the final half-hour, 'The Cursed' has trouble maintaining nail-biting intensity for very long"
United States
rogerebert.com
"The supporting cast is superb, and scene for scene, this is Ellis' best-directed film. [The] score is outstanding as well (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"
United States
ReelViews
"I wouldn't go so far as to call it 'bold' or 'innovative', but there's a freshness to the storytelling and its attendant monster movie elements (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"
United States
Chicago Sun-Times
"Featuring top-notch production design and suitably earnest performances, 'The Cursed' serves as a solid reminder of why it's a really bad idea to mess with hallowed ground (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 4)"
United States
Decider
"Shades of 'The Exorcist' and 'The Witch' (...) doesn’t go far enough for The Cursed, which ultimately is little more than a rote creature feature"
United States
Austin Chronicle
"One of the better werewolf movies of the last few decades, glimmering with tragedy (...) 'The Cursed' may be a shaggy tale in places, but its bite is ultimately deep (…) Rating: ★★★ (out of 5)"
Denmark
Heaven of Horror
"A dark and fascinating tale that will surely resonate with both fans of werewolf movies and those that just enjoy a solid horror mystery with supernatural elements (…) Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)"
Cineuropa
"[It] seems torn between unapologetic trash and a desire for something a bit more respectable (...) There is nobody to follow or even care for a little"
