Tras un prólogo estupendo, la película recupera los peores vicios del Hollywood de la época, el del productor Hal B. Wallis. Y hay una promesa trágica en la película pero Sturges no tiene el tono para el relato y en este caso, es Anthony Quinn quien sale ganando, componiendo un villano lleno de inteligencia, extraña compasión y matices en cada mirada.
Solo por eso, puede verse con gran agrado.
