Medida, sencilla, pero profunda. Pereira, un entrañable Marcello Mastroianni, lentamente va haciendo su evolución personal, con total credibilidad. Los demás personajes aportan lo suyo, la dirección segura de cual es su objetivo: narrar sin excesos, pero con sentimiento, un drama en Portugal de 1938 y la metamorfosis que sufre un hombre mayor, viudo, en el transcurso de la historia. Un verdadero canto a la vida, a la verdadera libertad.
