Junto con Casablanca, la mejor película del húngaro Curtiz. Cagney en la encrucijada de morir en la silla eléctrica, no con dignidad sino como un miserable que clama piedad. El sacerdote O'Brien le ha hecho comprender que los gangsters terminan muriendo o coinvirtiéndose en sujetos despreciables como el que interpreta Bogart. Un buen retrato social de la América post depresión, demostrando que algo se pudre en las calles de las grandes ciudades.
