1916, during World War I. Lieutenant Maréchal and Capitaine de Boeldieu are two combat pilots who are shot down by the Germans. They are taken to a prisoner of war camp where they strike up a friendship with Lieutenant Rosenthal, a wealthy Jew who shares lavish food parcels sent by his family with his fellow prisoners. Este film de Jean Renoir me parece un intento fallido, o nada contundente, de críticar la sinrazón de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Eso en cuanto al trasfondo. Los actores intentan transmitir melancolía y desasosiego, con poco éxito, en unas condiciones carcelarias para nada verosímiles en el contexto que se mueve la película.
Por lo que toca al guión y realización, clásico pero excelente.
Puestos a dar una mirada crítica a la 1ª Guerra Mundial, prefiero sin ningún género de duda "Sin novedad en el frente".
