Synopsis
Back in her family home, the young Chinese director Wenqian Zhang settles in with her camera. A LONG JOURNEY HOME tells the story of this cohabitation via a relational, temporal and cinematographic journey that stirs up emotions while challenging the evolution of China's intergenerational family models from the inside. By leaving her camera rolling in a static shot, the director takes part in the film and finds the time she needs for confidences to be divulged. Two life accounts in particular unfold: those of her mother and her father. The former is looking to the future, the latter is entrenched in the past. Yet these two irreconcilable individuals still live under the same roof. The dramas and disagreements cast a shadow over the house and form passing yet cyclical storms. Recent Chinese history is implicitly outlined, the rapid growth of the 1990s having left a mark on society as a whole. A LONG JOURNEY HOME is a brilliant quest for emancipation, seeking a place among one's own people.
