Synopsis
Searching for Naomi Kawase, could serve as a subtitle for Chilean film-maker Cristian Leighton’s latest offering. Moreover, she is not the only woman who appears on the screen. The director’s grandmother features more prominently, as he accompanies her through her long and more or less peaceful demise. However, the film does not play on such a simple contrast. Leighton has decided to take us on a journey with many detours. Extracts from Kawase’s films are quoted time and time again and they all revolve around the search for identity: Leighton is looking for his father, paying homage to his adoptive mother whose portrait he presents to us as she lays dying.
We grasp the feeling of the broad brushstrokes described here: in order to get closer to his own past and the enigmas that agitate him, Leighton takes a different route. On the one hand, we are presented with a series of strange landscapes that are never identified (Iceland, for example), as if he were giving Chile an alternative land base, as though he had to exile Chile (in the manner of the novelist Bolano). On the other, the production of the most intimate, secret of images (filming her demise was hidden from the family) demonstrates that their substance is drawn from other images, other experiences, other faces – the photograms that belong to his adoptive mother of a Japanese film-maker. This is clearly an exercise in admiration, but also a majestic lesson in artistic humility which knows that the essence of a human being (birth and death) can only be reached via a detour through that which belongs to no-one.
