Synopsis
Interview and archive footage based documentary about a number of independent artists, curators and gallery owners in the former GDR. The film covers initiatives mostly from the 1980s like the »First Leipzig Autumn Salon« in 1984 (organized by artist and filmmaker Lutz Dammbeck and others), the group »CLARA MOSCH« from Karl-Marx-Stadt (comprised of Michael Morgner, Thomas Ranft, Carlfriedrich Claus, Dagmar Ranft-Schinke and Gregor-Torsten Schade), the »First Private Gallery« (EP) of Jürgen Schweinebraden in Berlin as well as Gerd-Harry »Judy« Lybke's gallery EIGEN+ART in Leipzig. Despite its short-comings this documentary offers an interesting insight into different subversive artistic and curatorial practices these GDR artists deployed and the juggling act of trying to reach the attention of the public and still trying to stay under the radar of government and Stasi officials, the quest for open spaces and self-organization and the establishment of an underground avantgarde.
