Synopsis

Flamboyant Glasgow hairdresser, Crawford Mackenzie, gets a letter from the World Hairdresser International Federation inviting him to its prestigious annual contest in L.A. Filmmaker Martin Samuels is making a fly-on-the-wall documentary about Crawford; he and the crew go too. After maxing out his credit card at the Century Plaza Hotel, Crawford discovers he's been invited to participate in the audience, not the contest; he tries every angle imaginable to get in the competition: he phones fellow Scot Sean Connery, he gets a union card, he asks the reigning champion for help, and he connects with Connery's publicist, who's having a bad hair day. Will he succeed, for the little people?

Critics' reviews

"Aims to do nothing but please, and it accomplishes its modest aim with charm and intelligence."

Mick LaSalle: San Francisco Chronicle
"A cheerful and smart mock documentary about hairdressing and Hollywood that knows enough not to take itself too seriously."

Kenneth Turan: Los Angeles Times
"Irresistibly silly."

Peter Travers: Rolling Stone
"One of those bright ideas for a TV sketch that convinces someone it's too good to waste on the small screen. It's not"

Jack Mathews: New York Daily News
"As it rubs our noses in our own fascination with vanity and the silliest values in life, it's charming enough to make us like it."

Stephen Holden: The New York Times
