After nothing came of the movie entitled Once Upon a Time, Ivo Caprino decided to divide the manuscript up into a series of movie shorts. The first fairytale movie was Ash Lad and the Good Helpers. As ever, it was Ivo's mother, Ingeborg Gude Folkestad, who modelled the figures. The movie had its premiere in Easter 1961 at the Saga cinema in Oslo as part of a programme of shorts.
