The film is inspired by the true story of international ballroom dancer Pierre Dulane. Banderas stars as a former professional dancer who volunteers to teach dance in the New York public school system. When his ballroom methods conflict with his students' hip-hop instincts, he teams up with them to create a new style of dance and becomes their mentor.
