Isaac Asimov no ha tenido suerte, en general, con las adaptaciones de sus obras al cine. Quizá sólo "Viaje alucinante", de Richard Fleischer, estuvo a la altura de las expectativas. En el caso de "Yo, robot", lo primero que debe decirse es que su relación con el libro de relatos de Asimov es escasa, por no decir nula: ver spolier.

Se mantiene el título y las famosas tres leyes de la robótica, pero poco más. El resto es inventado por los guionistas, de nuevo una historia sobre máquinas que toman conciencia de sí mismas y le dan por el saco al ser humano. En todo caso cabe decir que el inspirador, Asimov, fue de los primeros en hablar de este tema, después popularizado en filmes ya clásicos como "2001, Una Odisea del Espacio" y "Blade Runner". Alex Proyas, el cineasta egipcio afincado hace años en Estados Unidos, es el autor de la interesante "Dark City", y de la también peculiar, aunque inferior, "El cuervo". Es un director que sabe manejarse con atmósferas turbias, y en "Yo, robot" consigue momentos que no están exentos de interés. Sobre todo, la atención se eleva cuando aparece en escena el andoride coprotagonista, cuya capacidad para comprender y, sobre todo, para experimentar sentimientos, termina por emocionar al espectador. La primera parte, sin embargo, está llevada con un ritmo bastante pedestre, a lo que no ayuda precisamente unos diálogos desafortunados, que parecen escritos por un ejército de guionistas de parvulario. La segunda mitad se entona, sobre todo cuando empieza a desenmascararse quién está detrás de la rebelión de las máquinas. Hay secuencias de gran vigor, como el ataque de los robots al protagonista dentro del túnel, de una fuerza inusitada, y otras que sobrecogen el ánimo por su conseguido tono amenazante, como la mirada de androides escalando la cúpula de cristal del emblemático edificio de la empresa que los ha creado. Pero lo cierto es que se podría haber conseguido un resultado mejor; a ello hubiera contribuido contar con un protagonista distinto a Will Smith, que como actor de comedia es aceptable, pero cuyas dotes dramáticas están en proporción inversa a su demostrada capacidad para decir sus diálogos de la forma más inane posible.
