Lo más sorprendente de esta película es que se hiciera en un periodo tan oscuro en la historia de España. Buñuel le da una puñalada al catolicismo y a la persecución del bien. Tiene fondo y contenido, te hace pensar y reír. Muestra las esencias del ser humano, la corrupción de la humanidad y la anomalía de hacer el bien en un mundo malo por definición.

Hay innumerables detalles que hacen grande a esta película. Me encanta por ejemplo el contraste del retiro dentro del convento al enfrentamiento con el mundo exterior. Se ve cómo la monja puede hacer mucho más ayudando directamente a los pobres que rezando en un templo. Toda la película se puede resumir con el contraste que hace la música inicial de "Aleluya" con la música de moda que cierra la película.
Otro detalle excelente es ver cómo se alternan planos de gente trabajando mientras los otros rezan el angelus, o a la pobre viridiana intentando ordeñar una teta de vaca con una clara forma fálica, jugando con el doble juego surrealista.
Sin duda una obra maestra.
