Nominada al Oscar 2016 en la categoría de Filme de Habla no inglesa, la película que nos ocupa es una producción harto singular. Ciro Guerra nos trae una de las pocas películas colombianas que llegan a nuestras pantallas, y además posiblemente la única que trate sobre extintas tribus amazónicas, en la que se hablen desconocidos dialectos tribales y se filme la basta jungla en blanco y negro. Por todo ello, El abrazo de la serpiente es un documento de evidente valor cultural. Pero como producción cinematográfica no pasa de satisfacer o de resultar interesante, quedándose a medias en todos los frentes que aborda.

El filme narra dos momentos históricos distintos en paralelo. Karamakate, un menudo y hercúleo aborigen, chamán y último superviviente de su tribu, es el nexo de unión entre ambas historias, separadas entre sí por cuarenta años. En ambas guía por los indómitos parajes de la Amazonia colombiana a unos forasteros europeos que pretenden documentar científicamente la vegetación de la zona, y encontrar la sagrada Yakruna, una planta muy difícil de obtener. Un desencantado Karamakate recordará los hechos de la primera aventura mientras viva los de la segunda, y hace ver a sus acompañantes su repudio a los blancos, a los recolectores de caucho y a las guerras del territorio, a la par que ejerce de tutor espiritual. Al igual que estos expedicionistas, nos sumergimos en un viaje introspectivo y místico, en el que muchas dudas se plantean y pocas se responden. Se ofrece una experiencia sensorial e incierta, y gracias a una interesante temática (colonialismos, el impacto de la iglesia sobre las culturas vírgenes, el apego materialista del occidental...) y unos hermosos escenarios retratados en un bonito blanco y negro, se consiguen crear no pocos factores para captar el interés. Y su portentoso personaje principal, el magnético Karamakate, se echa la película a sus espaldas y la dota de carisma con su rotunda presencia. Pero todas esas premisas no reciben un desarrollo satisfactorio.
El ritmo del filme es lento, lo que añadido a un metraje largo y un argumento difuso e introspectivo, hace del visionado una experiencia ardua, pues la narración que se ofrece no es lo suficientemente arrebatadora como para aceptar sin paliativos su parsimonia. Dado que la película reposa sobremanera en el apartado estético, este se muestra pobre con respecto a lo que pretende (como ya ocurriera en Aguas tranquilas): bien es cierto que abundan los planos hermosos, pero también abundan feas tomas generales panorámicas del bosque, tomadas a demasiada velocidad como para apreciar debidamente los elementos, tristemente borrosos; no abundan, pero molestan sobremanera, determinados planos de archivo de animales salvajes, muy mal integrados en la película, que no interactúan con la acción, nada aportan y solo desentonan con su evidentemente distinto aspecto visual; no maneja un estilo de realización claro (ahora largas tomas con lentos travellings frontales, ahora tomas cenitales con helicóptero, ahora plano/contra plano fijo, ahora cámara en mano...); y, por último, sacan de la diégesis al espectador unos planos cósmicos en color (únicos del filme), que más allá de obviar sus objetivos conceptuales sólo ofrecen, como ya ocurriera en El renacido, momentos malickianos absolutamente prescindibles.
Su protagonista es un descubrimiento (no ya Jan Bijvoet, que no logra sino que añoremos la magnífica Borgman), y ofrece momentos cómicos y escenas de acción muy atractivas, además de planos hermosos y curiosas reflexiones. El simple hecho de que sea una película tan distinta a cualquier otra y de que muy probablemente tardemos en volver a ver una película de estas características hacen recomendable su visionado. Pero el resultado final es decepcionante con respecto a lo que la película prometía y a su éxito en el recorrido de galardones cinematográficos.
