Comedy Muriel is a young misfit adrift in a small Australian town called Porpoise Spit. Hogan se arriesgó a desnudar su sociedad y su neurosis, mostrándonos a una jovencita víctima de los estereotipos (de belleza, de éxito, de familia) de la clase media australiana (¿mundial?), que decide mandar todo al carajo y labrarse su destino con autonomía. Atrás quedan el padre arribista, la madre reprimida, las amigas hipócritas, en fin, toda la gente snob que la asfixiaba...pero el drama apenas comienza: vendrán otras adversidades, algunas insospechadas. Lo bonito es que Muriel se mantiene franca, sincera, pura si se quiere, mientras a su alrededor el mundo (nuestro mundo) sigue viniéndose abajo en su decadencia. Excelente reparto para un excelente guión. Un film inolvidable.
