Conmovedora película muy recomendable para los amantes de los animales, si bien con algunas lagunas narrativas y cierta repetitividad (aunque parece que se limita a exponer los hechos reales en que está basada). Eso sí, el auténtico protagonista de la cinta es el perro Hachi, desde su tierna infancia con esas miradas entrañables, hasta su edad adulta y dentro de la evolución que experimenta en la propia familia Wilson. Un can capaz, por méritos propios, de enternecer las iniciales antipatías de la esposa de Gere, interpretada por Joan Allen.
