Comedy Mortimer Brewster stops off in Brooklyn to visit his two favourite aunts Abby and Martha to tell them that he has just gotten married. Los exteriores ligeramente ventosos hechizan las breves secuencias abiertas y se configuran como espacios festivos, donde parece posible la felicidad.
El hilo de la comedia "negra" se va desenredando con limpia inocencia. La magia del film emana de dicho estado de gracia: la infancia.
La actuación de Cary Grant es dulce, apenas pirotécnica, tierna.
Con manchas góticas ( escenas del sótano, por ejemplo ) "Arsénico por compasión" sucede en un ámbito patriótico ( "La patria es la infancia" ) y dorado, que nos transporta al huerto donde el padre ronda.
