Atípica película en la filmografía de Allen, mi primer visionado allá en el 2005 me provocó una profunda decepción, por cuanto se aparta notablemente del estilo y temática de la mayoría de sus películas.
Tal como como expresan las escasas críticas negativas, el argumento es un tanto simple dentro de los parámetros del cine negro, y en su momento me defraudó que el maestro Allen también se apuntara a la corriente fácil del cine con asesinato de por medio.
Sin embargo, pasados los años, un nuevo visionado sin falsas expectativas aporta los mil y un matices que sólo un maestro sabe imprimir a sus obras, así como se confirma que sólo las grandes obras resisten varios visionados como ésta lo hace.

Allen concibe sus obras a partir de una idea básica, aderezada quizá de otras secundarias. En esta el mensaje primordial a desarrollar está explicado en la primera escena: a menudo la vida está gobernada por el simple azar, que determinará el destino afortunado o trágico de cada cual. Esta idea la ha repetido insistentemente en varias obras, aplicada a las relaciones de pareja, que funcionarán o no simplemente en función de la suerte que tengas, o bien de que el azar disponga que encuentres a tu pareja ideal.
Así, el destino del protagonista depende de su buena suerte desde que entra en contacto con la familia rica hasta el mismo final de la película. El personaje de Scarlett, por el contrario, tiene mala suerte tanto en su profesión, como en sus relaciones amorosas, como en su destino final. (Los policías también atribuyen a la mala suerte el estar en lugar equivocado en el momento equivocado, y el mejor deseo para el recién nacido es "tener suerte en la vida").
Otro tema básico de la película es la ambición, encarnada también en el protagonista. En esa línea podemos encontrar lejanas referencias al personaje de Shakespeare, Macbeth, capaz de cualquier cosa por conseguir sus objetivos. Es también costumbre de Allen incluir en sus obras ambientadas fuera de Nueva York referencias culturales del nuevo escenario, y en este caso no podían faltar alusiones a la obra del autor inglés. La aparición de los fantasmas es un recurso también claramente shakesperiano. Igualmente encontramos un retrato certero de otra institución británica, la alta aristocracia, con sus mansiones y su endogámico modus vivendi.
Al servicio de esas dos ideas básicas Allen construye un entramado de relaciones de pareja y familiares que ciertamente no tienen la profundidad a las que nos tiene acostumbrados en otras obras, quizá la parte más acertada es la fase de seducción/tentación entre Scarlett y el protagonista, que finalmente toma un giro poco convincente en la parte final.
En cuanto a la ambientación y repertorio musical, exquisito como siempre.
Por último, reseñar que la idea básica del crimen y castigo ya estuvo tratada magistralmente en una obra anterior, "Delitos y faltas", por lo que en cierto modo ésta resulta un remake de aquella.
En resumen, a pesar de no ser, para mí, una de sus mejores películas, a la postre resulta ser más interesante de lo que me pareció en un principio.
