Con su estilo pausado y meticuloso en cada encuadre, Antonioni ofrece una estilizada radiografía sobre el hastío matrimonial a través de una pareja de intelectuales en un entorno aburguesado, carente de ideales, acomodaticio y ocioso. Muestra el alejamiento y la desidia de una sociedad anclada en el vacío moral, consiguiendo una atmósfera de etéreas reflexiones sobre el desamor, la soledad y la incomunicación, los grandes temas que el autor refleja en su trilogía (La aventura, La noche y El eclipse). Depuradísima realización en la que el silencio se impone a los diálogos, por otra parte precisos, bañada por una fotografía envolvente y contrastada de luces y sombras. Resulta un impecable estudio de personajes materialistas abocados a la incomprensión, inmersos en el tedio de la ociosidad y apuntalado por el trabajo de su trío protagonista, contenido Mastroiani, lúcida Jean Moreau y sugerente Mónica Vitti. Perfecta en todos los sentidos.
