Aija kind of likes Janis yet marries aged Galdars (and is also having a relationship with Aizups). Janis goes away without noticing that servant-girl Ievi?a is in love with him. When he returns after many years, Galdars has died, Aija and her three daughters live from hand to mouth. They start living together but the relationship turns out to be a difficult one because of lack of mutual feelings and honesty.
