- Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla) was born on 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. Throughout his life he has devoted his time and energy to helping people all over the world. He was ordained a priest in 1958 and by 1963 was appointed archbishop. After being named to the College of Cardinals in 1967, he was elected Pope in 1978. Throughout his more than 20 years of service, he has touched many lives, and continues to do so, despite a 1981 assassination attempt. Through the many hardships and celebrations, Pope John Paul II has remained one of the most highly regarded men in history.
