Synopsis
July 3rd, 1973: another mythical night. Ziggy Stardust’s last concert and the final evening of Aladdin Sane’s tour. This documents the day on which glam was murder, and Bowie rose to the trampoline to jump back into the abyss. A string of hits (“Changes”, “Space Oddity” “Sufragette City”), rareities (“All the Young Dudes”, “Let’s Spend the Night Together”), abundant make-up and excitement. An historic film that portrays the Thin White Duke in his finest hour. It was a legendary night. Pennebaker's camera always documents changes, this has already been said, and Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars is no exception: here we see the day that glam was killed, after which Bowie sprang onto the trampoline for a new leap into the abyss. Bowie doesn’t shed a tear when he leaves something behind; such is his futuristic and modernist conception of pop as a machine on which to move forwards to new pastures. The film offers everything a Bowie fan could want: an endless string of hits ("Changes", "Space Oddity", "Suffragette City", "Rock & Roll Suicide"), rare footage (a medley of "Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud "/" All The Young Dudes "/" Oh You Pretty Things", a Stonian version of "Let's Spend the Night Together", one by the Velvet Underground (White Light / White Heat") and a lot of makeup, drama, sets and emotion. A sublime film, with the Thin White Duke at his most brilliant, androgynous and enigmatic, which would become pure musical history.
