Synopsis
A cautionary tale of love, crime, fantasy, and addiction, Iowa follows two young lovers, Esper (writer-director-producer Matt Farnsworth) and Donna (Diane Foster), who decide to go into the “batch” business—cooking their own methamphetamine—only to watch it burn a searing hole in their lives. (In real life, Farnsworth and Foster are the married parents of two children.)
Iowa opens as Esper learns he’s been made the beneficiary of his recently deceased father’s $200,000 life insurance policy. But dirty local parole officer, Larry (Michael T. Weiss), in cahoots with Esper’s mom, Effie (Rosanna Arquette), wants the money for himself; so in thrall to Larry is Effie that she’ll go as far as helping murder her own son in order to get Larry the money he craves. Thus is set in motion a tale of love, violence, and revenge, all played against an unnerving Midwestern backdrop, one uncompromisingly harshly real and unlike any seen in recent American filmmaking.
Starring newcomers Farnsworth and Foster, Iowa also features in-your-face performances by film veterans John Savage (The Deer Hunter, The New World), Rosanna Arquette (The Executioner’s Song, Desperately Seeking Susan, Pulp Fiction), and Michael T. Weiss (Freeway, Jeffrey)
An unflinching fictional look at the very real-life crystal methamphetamine epidemic now raging in the American Midwest, Iowa brilliantly if heart-wrenchingly depicts crystal meth’s devastating impact on the lives of users and the people around them. Notable for its restraint and compassion, Iowa merits comparison with other cautionary tales like Requiem For A Dream and Drugstore Cowboys such and lovers-on-the-lam classics as Bonnie & Clyde and Natural Born Killers.
Riddled with sex, drugs, and ultraviolence, Iowa is also a resonant story of faith, love, and hope (witness, the protagonist’s last name), themes made vibrantly evident by Farnsworth’s and Foster’s sensitive, deeply felt no-holds-barred performances.
