A partir de un relato de Isak Dinesen, Orson Welles dirigió este bello mediometraje sobre un viejo acaudalado del Macao de 1880 que entrega unas monedas a un marinero para que engendre un hijo a su joven esposa. Welles aplica su barroco estilo —esos planos desde ángulos imposibles, el partido escénico obtenido de la profundidad de campo — para narrar una historia que se balancea delicadamente entre la realidad y la ficción, la verdad y la mentira, imprimiéndole un adecuado tono vesperal y melancólico.
