Tan entretenida como llena de trampas, por momentos llega a tenerlo a uno verdaderamente en ascuas esta desconocida película con un reparto estelar, donde sin duda la peor es la pesada de Doris Day. Se la aguanta bien durante toda la película gracias a la buena compañía que tiene todo el tiempo (Myrna Loy, elegantísimamente envejecida, y Roddy McDowall se la comen, y Rex Harrison parece que se contiene nada más), aunque hay algún momento de vergüenza ajena (lloros y frases ahogadas bajando la escalera). El director cumple con creces y se permite alguna escena muy tensa (inicio excelente en la niebla, con una voz inquietante que parece Peter Sellers pasado por helio) y sobre todo una narración muy eficiente. Luego está la fotografía magistral de Russell Metty que vuela algunos metros por encima del resto de la película (la música es también de Frank Skinner, otro del equipo habitual de Douglas Sirk). Al final no es una maravilla pero no le quita uno el ojo de encima hasta que termina.

Seguramente la mayor decepción de la película es que Roddy McDowall solo aparezca en dos escenas, mostrando un personaje verdaderamente intrigante y que al final queda como un triste cabo suelto, metido con calzador para despistar. Otros cabos sueltos importantes son esas llamadas nocturnas que supuestamente ha hecho John Gavin y que nunca se explican, y esa preocupación de Herbert Marshall que tampoco se aclara. Si se piensa bien resulta todo un poco torpe y tramposo simplemente para repartir sospechas y marear un poco. Al final los malos son, como casi siempre, los menos sospechosos. Ya sabía yo que Peggy era una ***!
