Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) is the commander of the battle-decimated 701st Infantry Regiment of the French Army, dug in along the Western Front in a stalemated WWI. Que Stanley Kubrick ha sido uno de los más grandes maestros del cine nadie lo duda; como tampoco nadie puede poner en duda que Senderos de Gloria es el alegato antimilitarista definitivo. Es directa, cruel, angustiosa y por desgracia real. La historia que narra tal vez nunca sucedió de esa forma, pero hubo muchísimos casos similares a ambos lados de las trincheras. Los famosos travelings de Kubrick muestran de forma cruda y con el velo elegante del blanco y negro lo que nunca puede ser elegante: las trincheras de la guerra.
El papel del coronel Dax es la coherencia y el honor, mientras que el general Mireau es la vanidad, el descaro y la deshonra en persona. El desarrollo del consejo de guerra y las escenas posteriores son sublimes y consiguen despertar rabia e impotencia. Pocas veces me había emocionado realmente con una película bélica.
Pese a lo que se dice, creo que Senderos de Gloria es incomparable a la otra gran película bélica de Kubrick, La chaqueta metálica, aunque ambas sean relatos antimilitaristas, y que la primera es sin duda superior.

Todo el plano de los condenados mientras son dirigidos hacia los postes de ejecución es de lo más grande que ha filmado Kubrick. Sus traveling y los primeros planos, junto con el sonido repetitivo de los tambores, consiguen crear una atmósfera increiblemente agobiante. Finalmente la tensión se disuelve tras la ejecución, pero la escena más emotiva es sin duda la final en la cantina de soldados, cuando la muchacha alemana capturada canta delante de los militares y consigue emocionarles. Es una de las escenas más emotivas que recuerde en el cine.
