La película a ratos se hace un poco lenta y monótona pero, en general, mantiene el suspense.
Christian Bale se merece un gran reconocimiento, no solo por su asombroso cambio físico, sino también por su actuación.
'El maquinista' es una película psicológica sobre la paranoia del ser humano, el arrepentimiento, y los mecanismos de defensa de la mente. Tiene guiños culturales y detalles muy cuidados que cobran sentido.
Como recomendación, mejor verla en versión original porque el doblaje es bastante malo.

El tema de trauma del pasado del protagonista para el que se inventa un alter ego se puede ver en otras películas del estilo, como El Club de la lucha, pero sigue sin cansar.
Muy buenos los detalles como el cartel de la Ruta 66, el cuenco de cristal o las matrículas del coche.
El final predecible pero no podía ser de otra manera, por fin el protagonista encuentra su paz y así la consiga el espectador.
