Drama. Comedy
Warren Schmidt has led a safe, predictable life working in the insurance industry in Omaha, Nebr. for many years, yet now faces retirement. At the same time he is forced to take a hard look at his wife, his life and his relationship with his estranged daughter. An often hilarious series of events follow as Schmidt embarks on an unpredictable RV journey to attend his daughter's wedding in Denver.

Para los que tengan mucho sentido del humor, sí se puede encuadrar en el género 'comedia'. Pero la verdad es que esta historia tiene sobre todo de drama. Un drama que sin duda les toca vivir a muchísimas personas cuando ven aproximarse el fin de sus días como 'ser útil a la sociedad'. Cuando observan impotentes cómo todo cuanto han construido se desintegra y les hace plantearse de qué han servido tantísimos años de esfuerzo.
Una película en la que el genial Jack Nicholson interpreta a un hombre de a pie, que lucha por mantener un mínimo status en la vida de los que le rodean, antes de que éstos le aparten definitivamente. Es interesante porque el papel que hace en esta ocasión no es de alguien histriónico, ni fantástico, ni exagerado. Sólo humano, lo cual quizá sea lo más difícil de retratar.

Evidentemente no lo consigue y termina dándose por vencido, cosa que el director quiere arreglar en parte con la excusa de la carta del niño apadrinado.
Me gustan mucho dos escenas en particular que estoy seguro son homenajes a sendos clásicos: 1, la de Jack pidiéndose una copa en la barra exactamente como hiciera su personaje en EL RESPLANDOR; 2, la de Kathy Bates alimentando al enfermo protagonista igual que cuando tenía delante a James Caan en MISERY.
