Synopsis
Joe Quinn, a wealthy political boss, wants his daughter Paula, known as "Red," to marry socially connected George Willoughby, who is running for Congress with Joe's assistance. Red is amenable to the marriage until she learns that her father and George's mother support the union. Red confronts her father, but as she begins to speak, she is knocked to the ground by a falling weather balloon and takes out her anger on Kirk Duncan, the balloon's pilot. Kirk leaves in anger, neglecting to take the balloon. The next day, Red returns the balloon to the weather bureau and Kirk shows her around. Joe is interested in Kirk's weather knowledge because he believes that if it rains on the day of the election, the rural vote will stay indoors and George will be elected. Red invites Kirk for a weekend in the country with her and her father, but during the visit, Kirk stalks out in anger when Joe asks him for an election day weather forecast. To spite Kirk, Red telephones George and accepts his marriage proposal, although she is in love with Kirk. When Kirk realizes that he has lost the woman he loves, he gets drunk and changes the forecast to rain. Later, Kirk resigns from his job and tells Red that his fake forecast was done out of love. The next morning brings a steady downpour, however, and Red believes Kirk has lied to her. Red confronts Joe and demands that he call a minister. He mistakenly believes that she is going to marry George and brings Mrs. Willoughby along. Red marries Kirk, however, and Joe and Mrs. Willoughby follow suit.
