Synopsis
The old miner Pedro de Alexina is the master of ceremony during the wake, the funeral procession and burial of Joáo Batista, a man who dies at 120 years of age. Pedro is only 81 years old and he enjoys being the centre of attention while telling us poetical and metaphysical stories, and while remembering the thousands of African slaves who were taken to the Minas Gerais – one of the wealthiest areas in Brazil – to extract gold and diamonds. When one of them found a diamond, he would bury it again: “The earth gives, the earth eats” was the saying used for the film’s title.
