Synopsis
Adapted from the very famous japanese fantasy books illustrator Yoshiharu Tsuge, this bizarre yet stunning beautiful film is directed by Isao Yamada (1952 -). In 1974, he joined the famous Shuji Terayama's avant-garde theatre company "Tenjo Sajiki", and was became the art director in some Terayama films, like "Pastoral: To Die In the Country", "Farewell to the Ark" and "Grass Labyrinth". He began his own film works at 1977, and made a lot of 8mm and 16mm short films in 80s and 90s. In 1992, he made his first feature "Anmonaito No Sasayaki Wo Kiita" (I've Heard The Ammonite Murmur), The Soul Odyssey is his third feature, very bizarre characters with kaleidoscopic photography.

He was even a composer and made music score in Shinji Aoyama's film "Eureka".

I can't find more informations about this wonderful director, only this :

Isao Yamada began his career as a member of an experimental actors' group led by Shuji Teryama. It was Teryama's film Image Collage on Film, that fascinated Yamada to the degree that he decided to abandon the stage in favour of film-making. Instead of relating narratives, he wanted to convey something similar to poetry.

Most of Yamada's works were made on Super8 film, but he has also tried other formats in his enormous output. Since the late 1970s up to today, he has produced some 70 films. His works often combine dream symbolism with autobiographical elements. One and the same film can contain a variety of styles: a more traditional narrative style, mixed with a freer, more associative play of images.

Isao Yamada has said that his films can be regarded as if they were dreams. When I ask him to explain what he means by this, he replies, "I want to express in visuals the feeling of waking to see a dream in my films. This comes from my encounter with surrealist film and my immersion into Jean Cocteau's world of 'dream realism'." Yamada's films have been shown at film festivals all over the world, including Montreal 1986, Berlin 1987, Cannes 1992, Sao Paolo 2002 and Oberhausen 2004. In addition to being a film-maker, Isao Yamada is also a manga author and visual artist.

Isao Yamada was born in 1952 in Hokkaido, Japan, but now lives and works in Tokyo and Sapporo.
