Synopsis
A study of line and forms at the sound of Frédérique Chopin. Germain Dulac intended to visually recreate the motifs of Chopin's Prelude in B Flat, which was inspired, according to Georges Sand, by a gray, rainy day at La Grande Chartreuse [described in her Winter in Mallorca as the mrlodious sound of the rain hitting the tile roof]. A turning record appears, divides... then fades into luminous sprays rushing forth precipitously, which finally give way to natural signs of musically-inspired emotion: the monotonous oscillation of a clock pendulum which alternates with details of the exterior atmosphere: water trickling on windowpanes, the regular tumbling of raindrops into a puddle surrounded with foliage, sad and rain-soaked walkways.
