Después de la efectiva Margin Call, J.C. Chandor presenta su nuevo film, All is Lost, un tour de force donde Robert Redford es un navegante que tras quedarse dormido, despierta con la mala nueva que su bote ha sido golpeado por un contenedor a la deriva, por lo que deberá enfrentarse a un sinfín de situaciones para intentar sobrevivir.
Su bote terminará hundido en el mar, y el hombre en un bote salvavidas donde tendrá que hacer frente a todos los peligros que contiene el mar abierto; el hambre, tormentas, sed, tiburones, donde gracias a su sentido común y a su astucia irá enfrentando cada reto.
Confiando en las posibilidades del lenguaje cinematográfico, Chandor sostiene el relato en un solo personaje, casi sin diálogos, sin metáforas de ninguna índole, ni discursos rimbombantes, ni tigres, pelotas ni nada, solo el hombre frente a la inmensidad del mar y su adversidad.
Robert Redford está perfecto en su rol, contenido y poniendo el cuerpo en cada momento; sólo son Redford y la cámara, y salir de un problema y enfrentar el siguiente, y resolverlo. Tensión y dramatismo puramente cinematográfico.
All is Lost es una película con una historia mínima pero poderosa, perfectamente contada sin rebuscamientos, una fotografía impecable, tomas submarina al servicio del relato y no meras postales. Una historia que pone el énfasis en no dejar de intentarlo, aunque parezca que se ha perdido todo.
