When the dashing and guileless Edmond Dantes (Jim Caviezel) is betrayed by his best friend (Guy Pearce) and wrongly imprisoned, he becomes consumed by thoughts of vengeance. After a miraculous escape, he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, insinuates himself into the French nobility, and puts his cunning plan of revenge in action.
Critics' reviews
  • "This is the kind of adventure picture the studios churned out in the Golden Age -- so traditional it almost feels new. (...) The kind of movie that used to be right at home at the Saturday matinee, and it still is. (...) Rating: ★★★ (out of four)."
  • "The new Count moves with the smooth, plastic efficiency of a TV miniseries. Inspiration and originality may be in short supply, but the movie gets the job done."
  • "The film's resolute indifference to fashion makes it, perhaps paradoxically, a refreshing piece of old-style entertainment"
